Bengali Sweets in Mumbai

I dont think I have a "Sweet Tooth" as such but then you cant keep a bong away from his beloved ilish and mishti for long. After all we bongs live to eat ...

So when the urge to dig into a nolen gurer shondesh, kheer kodombo or mishti doi+rosogolla gets really strong ( and it happens about once in a couple months ) "Sweet Bengal" is where we head off to ... the only joint in Mumbai where you get authentic Bengali sweets.

There are quite a few branches ... the nearest to our home is the one @ 1st Floor Galleria Mall, Hiranandani - Powai and others on JP Road Andheri West, Napean Sea Road ( pictures above ), Inorbit Mall-Malad etc ... The quality and taste is consistently amazing and the ambience is pleasantly bengali with Jamini Roy prints, copies of Desh & Sananda for sale ... The salesmen are usually bongs themselves and once they make out you are bong will give you a nice toothy smile and start chatting in bong and urge you to have the extra mohan bhog or plate of rosomalai ...

Getting tempted to go and have some koraishutir kochuri and chhannar shingara today ...

Grihapravesh at Gundecha Hills

"Griha+Pravesh" in Sanskrit translates to "House+Entry" ... rituals performed while entering a new home.
The sun, moon & stars ( and a bengali brahmin pundit seen in the pictures above ) had to be aligned in order to finalize the date of moving into our new home.
For the uninitiated, a Grihapravesh may be done only by a pundit on specific auspicious dates as per the Hindu almanac ... In the meantime the contract at our previous rented apartment was running out, the landlord was chasing us to vacate and obviously the new home had to be made ready to live in.
So you get the picture ... pulling off the Grihapravesh while tweaking all these constraints was no walk in the park ... and we did it on 29th June 2009 !!!

Note from Evernote

Got this new app "evernote" installed on my mobile ... quite cool ... it allows me to create notes, take pictutes, record voice and video from my mobile and also upload all of these to a website which I can then access from my laptop.

I think I can also email the stuff directly to blogspot and it gets automatically published ... well lets see if this post comes up on my blog.

A new home in mumbai

I'd mentioned somewhere earlier on the blog that I was getting rooted in mumbai ... Well the roots just got deeper and stronger.

After months of research, cost benefit analysis, speculation on real estate trends and outlook we finally took the plunge and bought our first apartment in mumbai !!!

More details on the evaluation / selection process and key learnings will follow ( hopefully once we settle down ) ... Here are a couple of snaps taken at our new place as we get ready to move in over the next few days ...

Raju & Satyam

Here's a Facebook exchange I had with Ambale :-)

Vivek is laughing over: "Raju, Raju - Yes Baba; Cheating us - No baba; Telling lies - No baba; Open the balance sheet - HA HA HA!" 8:49am - Comment

here i lose money on moronic raju and someone tinkers with nursery rhymes for a laugh ... sheer poetic injustice :-(

Vivek Subramanyam at 2:08pm January 10
@UD: Ouch.. hope the damage on Raju was not too bad. Anyways, tinker with a nursery rhyme and I assure you - you will feel better!

Udayan Dasgupta at 8:34pm January 10
hmmmm ... lets give it a shot ...

Raju with intentions very ill
Cooked Satyam books and stock prices went up Banjara Hill
Then he tried to buy Maytas with money only on paper
The deal broke down
Raju lost his crown
And Satyam came tumbling after

nope i dont feel any better ...
